100 Years On

On this day 100 years ago, Britain became embroiled in its costliest conflict to date, World War One. Easily the single most defining moment of the 20th century, the four years of total war ultimately resulted in a global tragedy. If you’re in Britain please remember to join hundreds of thousands of others tonight in turning your lights off and lighting a candle in your window.

Also, if you’ll forgive this history student a small plug, if you’re going to read anything today it should be The Clock Struck War by Mardibooks. It’s full of poignant, soul-searching pieces covering human conflicts from the depths of history to the present day. Lest we forget.
